The Horsetail macerate it is a product that turns out to be very useful to all those who have an organic garden. It is a natural way to take care of it, thus avoiding - that's why we talk about organic - poisoning the soil and vegetables with chemicals, opting instead for natural remedies, based on horsetail and other interesting and useful plants.
In most cases, homemade products can be used, based on plants, flowers and fruits that we find around us. Having organic gold, therefore, does not force us to spend a fortune on plant protection products, something that is often led to think.
Among all the natural products that we can use, the horsetail macerate is undoubtedly one of the most interesting. You can hear about macerated as well as decoction, for both the property of being able to prevent and contain most of the cryptogamic diseases which usually attack and damage vegetables. Both macerated and decocted, as we will see, can be prepared at home starting from both dry and fresh horsetail plants.
Horsetail macerate: effects
Before learning how to produce this macerate with our own hands, let's begin to understand if it is what is right for us. From the literature we know that thehorsetail is able to strengthen plants making them less susceptible to cryptogamic diseases. Why does it happen? Because precisely the horsetail has a high content of silica, an element that strengthens the tissues of horticultural plants and therefore makes them less sensitive to both mold and fungi such as downy mildew, terrible root rot and bad white.
In the case of the decoction, we can also count on a good anti aphid remedy.
Horsetail macerate: instructions for use
There are several ways to use the macerate and the decoction of horsetail, it depends on what is the problem that pushes us to resort to it. Sometimes it is applied on the leaves, other times it is better to spread it on the ground and still others on the roots, at the time of transplanting.
As it is a completely natural product, there is no problem with doses. Better to stick to those recommended, of course, but even if you overdo it, by mistake or by distraction, nothing bad happens. With the chemical fungicides, there is a risk of damaging if not killing the plants, with our horsetail, however, there is no need to be afraid, there is no risk.
To use the macerated on the leaves it is used to water them after having diluted it 1 to 5. With a modest-sized vegetable garden, you can manage it with a 5-liter watering can where you can directly dose water and macerate, otherwise you need a special pump.
The horsetail via the leaves is mainly used to prevent or contain powdery mildew, the white sickness of pumpkins and courgettes. Normally the classic treatment involves applying the product every 20 days but can be intensified if the diseases are ongoing and in an acute phase. To apply the macerate it is better to wait for days that are not too humid but not under the beating sun.
When it is necessary to fight i root rot and to safeguard the tubers and the underground parts of the vegetables, the decoction or macerate must be used in the soil, directly. In any case, they must be diluted as in the previous case and then distributed on the ground with a frequency that can go from two to three weeks.
Let's move on to the third case of using horsetail, that for transplanting, on the roots. Used like this, this product makes sure to protect the seedlings from diseases related to spores present in the soil. It is necessary to proceed before planting them, soaking the earthen bread in the decoction for a few seconds so that the roots absorb it.

So far we have talked about decoction and of macerated, as if they were the same thing but in fact the preparation process is different. In the case of macerated, the fresh plant must be fermented in a container, one liter of water for each hectogram of plant. Then it is filtered, diluted one to five and left to macerate, usually for at least a week. In reality, rather than counting the days it is necessary to wait for a kind of foam to appear on the surface, at which point they wait a couple of more days and then our macerate is ready.
To produce the decoction instead, another process is followed. The 100 grams of dry plant must be accompanied by a liter of water, boiled together and then left to cool. After filtering, the mixture is diluted, one by five, with water, and here, more immediately, the decoction of horsetail.

Let's take a step back to get to know the horsetail plant and its properties. It is a spontaneous plant that grows in humid soils or on the banks of ditches, it is very easy to find, even in Italy. Its scientific name is Equisetum but we can hear it called too horsetail grass or horsetail. It is very easy to recognize the horsetail, in spring it forms a yellow stem with a darker cap and looks like a mushroom, while in summer the stem turns green and very thin leaves appear similar to needles or hairs.
