A tough message from plastic and the ocean

Marine life faces "irreparable damage" from the millions of tons of plastic waste that end up in the oceans each year, the United Nations warned.

Plastic, as we know it, has been around for onlyabout 60-70 yearsBut in that time it transformed everything from clothing, cooking, and catering to product design, engineering, and retail.

This large amount of waste was fueled by modern life, where plastic is used for many disposable or "single use" items: from drink bottles and diapers to cutlery and cotton buds.

It is estimated that around 10 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans each year.

Over time, plastic waste slowly degrades and breaks down into tiny micro-fragments that are also causing concern among scientists.

Plastic was found in some fish, which can lead to malnutrition or starvation. In addition, when ingesting these fish, humans are affected, although it is still unknown in what way.
