Dangerous insects

Dangerous insects: which are the poisonous and lethal insects for humans and the most harmful insects for plants. Poisonous animals living in Italy and beyond.

Speak aboutdangerous insectsit is very vague. That's why we decided to divide the topic into sections. There areinsects dangerous for humans, poisonous and lethal insects, insects harmful to plants… Let's see some lists with the respective damages caused.

Let's start withpoisonous insectsand lethal. If we talk aboutpoisonous insectseveryone imagines tarantulas and scorpions ... The imagination does not deviate from reality. Amongdangerous insectsand more lethal for humans is the yellow scorpion.

Insects dangerous to humans

Here is a ranking

  • Yellow scorpion
  • Moscow tze tze
  • Red scorpion
  • Mosquito
  • Killer bees
  • Fire ants

The yellow scorpion is an endemic species of the deserts of Africa and the Middle East while the red scorpion is found in India, Pakistan and Nepal and is considered the most dangerous scorpion in the world (its venom is fatal in 40% of cases).

NOTES: Although it is commonly called an "insect", technically a scorpion is not an "insect" but an arachnid.

If here in Italy mosquitoes are only a nuisance, in other parts of the globe they transmit life-threatening diseases. Mosquitoes are vectors of malaria, Dengue fever, yellow fever and various forms of encephalitis. Recently, also in Italy the mosquito has been counted among thedangerous insectsfor man. The reason? In the summer of 2018 there were several cases of West Nile Virus, transmitted precisely by mosquito bites.

Can a fly be considered adangerous insect?
Yes, when it comes to the tze-tze fly. This insect is widespread on the African continent, is longer than the classic fly and transmits African trypanosomiasis, a serious infection known as sleeping sickness.

Thebees, in general, they are not considered dangerous. Bees try not to sting humans. In reality they use the sting very sparingly because, when they "sting" the bees die. The sting is "attached" to the last section of the outline of the gastro-intestinal system. When the sting comes off, the outline of the intestinal cavity is torn and the bee is doomed to certain death.

Not all bees are the same. The killer bee (Africanized bee) is a hybrid that was generated in the late 1950s from a cross between European bees and South African bees. The killer bee has a more aggressive temperament than local bees. Bee sting in allergic subjects can lead to anaphylactic shock. Africanized bees caused the deaths of dozens of humans in the US during 2017.

Thefire antsthey can be dangerous for humans. If an ant nest is accidentally stepped on, they come out quickly until they climb onto the legs of the "intruder" man. Thefire antsthey have small jaws and stings. A single fire ant does not represent a problem for humans, but when a mass of ants covers a leg and stings the victim repeatedly, thetheir poison"Burns like fire". As a result of the intense pain (which lasts approximately 20-30 minutes), a blister forms which tends to become infected.

Dangerous animals in Italy

Fortunately, thedangerous insectscounted are not widespread on the Italian territory. Despite their lack, in Italy there arepoisonous animals which can be annoying for humans. In this paragraph we will not talk about insects (except for twopoisonous spiders which, like scorpions, are not insects but arachnids).

  1. Malmignatta orMediterranean black widow
  2. Violin spider
  3. Viper dell’Orsini

The malmignatta (Latrodectus tredecimguttatus) is a spider better known asMediterranean black widow. It is especially widespread in the countryside of Central Italy. Its body is characterized by 13 red spots. The bite of theMediterranean black widowit can cause serious consequences (including death in allergy sufferers). Common symptoms of its bite are: nausea, vomiting, sweating, fever, abdominal cramps and fainting.

Theviolin spideris often counted amongdangerous insects, however, as stated, it is not an insect but an arachnid. This spider species is widespread throughout the Peninsula. The poison can cause necrosis of the affected tissues triggering very conspicuous wounds.

In some cases, the viper bite can be lethal. The Orsini viper is an Italian viper widespread in the Abruzzese and Umbrian-Marchigiano Apennines. Among the Italian vipers this is the least poisonous, however better not to come across this specimen! The Vipera Aspis lives on the Alps and the Apennines, while in the Dolomites it is necessary to be careful of the Vipera del Corno. The viper is the only venomous snake on the peninsula. Better to pay attention and learn to distinguish a common snake from a viper. Here is the guide: differences between viper and snake.
